Dear Students,

My name is Ms. Franczyk and I will be your Math teacher this year. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself, summarize the Math program and welcome all of you to a new year of learning.

When I was eighteen years old, I immigrated to the USA from Poland. I wanted to be a teacher since I was a child, but when I arrived to the USA, without speaking English fluently, I didn't think that this dream could come true. However, I started to take English classes and study International Business in a small college in Chicago. Even though the classes in business were very interesting, I knew that my vocation was to be a teacher. I changed my major a few years later and continued my education at DePaul University.  I became a teacher in 2001 and earned National Board Certification in 2007. In the past, I worked in Chicago Public Schools as a first, second, third, fourth and sixth grade teacher.  I look forward to teaching sixth and seventh grade Math!

This year, you will spend one hour learning Mathematics in Iowa classroom every day. We will work with a program from Singapore. It is explicit and challenging, but it also provides a lot of support in the areas that might be challenging for you.  In addition, we will work on projects that relate to real life situation, in which you will collect, analyze and present data. We will also examine and discuss global issues from the mathematical point of view. This year, you will spend a significant amount of time learning more about fractions, decimals, percentage and algebraic expression. In order to be successful in Math class you will need to pay attention, participate, do homework, study at home and ask for help when you need it.

Please make sure that you have the following items ready for Math class: a notebook, grid paper, simple calculator, inch/centimeter ruler, compass and protractor. Please contact the office if you are unable to purchase these items, and we will look for a way to assist you.

I am very happy and eager to get to know all of you, and I welcome all of you to Math class in Iowa! Enjoy the last days of summer vacation. Be safe during the long Labor Weekend. I will see you on September 6th!

Queridos Estudiantes,

Mi nombre es Ms. Franczyk, la maestra de matemáticas de este año. Aprovecharé esta oportunidad para presentarme, también para resumirles lo que será el curriculum de matemáticas y para darles la bienvenida a este nuevo año escolar.  

Empezaré contándoles que a los dieciocho años emigré de Polonia a los Estados Unidos. Desde siempre quise ser maestra pero cuando llegue a Estados Unidos no hablaba inglés y pensé que este sueño nunca se realizaría. De todas maneras comencé a estudiar inglés para después estudiar Comercio Internacional en una pequeña universidad de Chicago. Aunque las clases de comercio eran interesantes, sabía que mi vocación era ser maestra, asi que me cambié de carrera a la Universidad DePaul. Me recibí de maestra en 2001 y más tarde en 2007 obtuve una certificación nacional en educación. Durante estos años he trabajado en escuelas públicas de Chicago, en primero, segundo, tercero, cuarto y sexto grado.  Ahora empezaré a enseñar matemáticas en sexto y séptimo grado!

Este año tendrán una hora diaria de matemáticas en el salón Iowa. Trabajeremos con un programa de Singapore que es explícito y complejo pero que proporciona apoyo en las áreas difíciles.

Además trabajaremos en proyectos que se relacionarán con la vida cotidiana, en el que ustedes juntarán, analizarán y presentarán información.  También examinaremos y discutiremos asuntos globales, desde el punto de vista matemático. Este año también aprenderán más sobre fracciones, decimales, porcentaje y expresiones algebráicas. 

Para tener éxito en la clase, tendrán que poner atención, participar, hacer la tarea, estudiar en casa y pedir ayuda cuando la necesiten.

Por favor tengan listo los siguientes útiles para la clase de matemáticas: Un cuaderno, papel cuadriculado, calculadora simple, regla de pulgada/ centímetro, compás y regla de medio-círculo. Si no les es posible comprar estos útiles, comuníquense con la oficina y buscaremos la manera de asistirlos.

Bienvenidos a la clase de matemáticas en Iowa! Disfruten los últimos días de vacaciones y manténganse seguros durante el fin de semana largo.  Los veo el 6 de septiembre!
