Charter Schools
What is a Charter School?
Charter schools are public schools,
independently operated and open to any student living in the city of Chicago.
These schools may be newly created, or they may be conversions of existing
public schools. Every charter school has a unique
mission.
The Illinois State Board of Education and local school
boards hold charter schools accountable to achieve positive academic results and
adhere to the charter contract. Charter schools exercise increased autonomy in
curriculum, budget, staffing, calendar and governance.
In return, charter schools are
accountable for academic results and fiscal practices to their sponsors, parents
and funders. To remain open, they must meet the high standards and goals set
forth in their charters.

EECS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit
organization funded primarily by Chicago Public Schools and supplemented by
private resources.
