Mission Statement

At the elementary level, it is critical to develop learners who explore, inquire and are able to work collaboratively to construct knowledge and develop skills. At EECS it is not enough to learn concepts from books and memorize facts. It is necessary to approach all content areas from both a foundation of discipline-specific knowledge and an inquiry-based, hands-on approach.

Habits

EECS will use Habits of Heart, Mind and Work to define how the EECS community will interact and work with one another.  These habits are what drive our culture and they are what we expect our students to strive to master before graduating from EECS.  These habits will be integrated in curriculum, classroom management, teacher-student relationships, and will also be part of the family participation.  Students, Teachers and Staff will be held accountable for internalizing these habits throughout their entire experience at EECS.

Families will be notified when students are both exemplifying and contradicting the habits.  EECS is a community in which the children come to achieve academically, socially, and emotionally.  Through these habits our children will be in a nurturing environment that is not only safe and caring but that will also provide them with resources that can be useful when they participate in larger society.  It is the responsibility of all EECS community members to create and sustain a safe atmosphere.  At EECS we want our students to internalize the Habits of Work, Mind, and Heart, rather than behave in response to fear of punishment.  The Habits are listed as follows:

Habits of Work: “Working hard to be our best”

Students work hard when they are motivated and are supported by their peers and community. Supporting each other in their work allows for personal and group growth. These habits are not only necessary in a school environment but can be used in their future as participating members of society.
Students will meet these expectations:

Organization: “I come ready and prepared to learn”

Revision: “I will look closely at my work and have a friend check my work”

Collaboration (Working Together): “I will share what I know and ask what others know”

Focus: “I will pay close attention with all my body to what is happening in front of me”

Punctual (Prompt): “I will come to school and have my homework on time”

Habits of the Mind: “How to think not what to think”

Habits of the Mind are an approach that leads us to ask good questions and seek solid answers. Students will improve their minds and thinking abilities and maximize learning opportunities by asking ‘distinct questions. Through the Habits of the mind, students use both the traditional academic subjects and the ‘stuff’ of ordinary life. Students will apply the habits when appropriate to achieve goals and produce high quality work.

The following are the habits of the mind students at EECS will follow:

Evidence: “I will ask questions until I am sure I have all the answers I need”

Curiosity (Conjecture): “I will look for all possible solutions to a problem by asking questions”

Open-Mindedness (Connection): “I will respect my own and everyone else’s ideas and explore them all”

Meaning (Relevance): “I will look for how and why things make sense for me and others”

Viewpoint: “I will think about how things could be different from I how I see them”

Reflection: “I will talk and think about how I’ve changed and grown”

Habits of the Heart: “Do the Right Thing”

The Habits of the Heart allows EECS community members to follow what they have been taught as a child to d, listen to what their heart tells them to do, the right thing. Students listen to their hearts, know their own emotions, and respect the emotions and rights of others. These habits are taught at home, school, and in their community. As positive members of society they will use these skills in everyday life, and prosper. They do this by following these guidelines:

Respect: “I will remember to be a good friend to myself, my classmates and my community’

Perseverance(Keep at it):  “I will always try something and ask for help if I am struggling. I will also give help to others”

Nonviolence (Be safe):  “I will use my words, never my body to solve a problem”

Confidence:  “I will believe that I can succeed if I try my best and ask for help”

Communication: “I will say what I want to say nicely and allow others to do the same”
