Mission Statement

At the elementary level, it is critical to develop learners who explore, inquire and are able to work collaboratively to construct knowledge and develop skills. At EECS it is not enough to learn concepts from books and memorize facts. It is necessary to approach all content areas from both a foundation of discipline-specific knowledge and an inquiry-based, hands-on approach.

Assessment

EECS believes in tailoring instruction to student needs. For this reason, we have adopted the STEP assessment in grades Kindergarten through 3rd grade. The STEP (Strategic Teaching and Evaluation of Progress) was developed by the University of Chicago Center for Urban School Improvement to guide teachers’ classroom instruction through their students’ abilities. This assessment helps teachers understand where the students are in their literacy development and how they’ve developed those skills throughout an extended period of time. It assesses concepts such as: letter/sound recognition, phonemic awareness, concepts of print, comprehension, and reading fluency. This assessment is given 3 times, in September, February, and May.

Third and fourth grade students are also required to take the state standardized test, ISAT.
